When the carrot dog trend started to make it way around the internet I was very skeptical.
How can carrots taste like a hot dog?
And many of the recipes I came across needed special vegan ingredients that you would need to go to a specialty store to get. And with me living in the south there are not any vegan specialty stores nearby.
So I looked in my fridge and came up with my own recipe.
And if I am being honest these carrot dogs are good! The have that little resistance that hot dogs have and when you boil the carrots they are able to absorb any flavor making them delicious.
So keep reading to get my recipe!
8 carrots peeled
8 hot dog buns
¼ cup soy sauce
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
¼ cup veggie broth
2 TBSP maple syrup
2 TBSP liquid smoke
2 TBSP of yellow mustard
1 tsp of pickled jalapeno juice
1 tsp of garlic powder
1 tsp of onion powder
¼ tsp of red pepper flakes
¼ tsp of black pepper
Peel and cut carrots to the length of your hot dog buns.
Boil carrots in hot water for 15 minutes until they are fork tender. Rise with cool water.
In a larger bowl whisk together your liquids and spices until the are fully integrated.
In a large container place your cooled carrots in it without overlapping any of them. Pour in your liquid/spice mix.
Let carrots marinate for at least 6 hours (best overnight though) to absorb your mixture.
Book on the grill or stove top for 15 minutes rotating halfway through.
Best served in a bun with toppings.
